Assignment
Create your quoting portfolio
In your previous assignments, you have learned the steps to complete an accurate insurance quote. Each policy has different types of information you will need to gather in order provide an accurate quote to a customer. After gathering information, you have been given steps to complete the various types of insurance quotes.
As you begin your insurance career, you will be working with many different types of insurance. In this class we have covered Personal Property Insurance, Personal Car Insurance, and Commercial Property Insurance. When a customer request a quote, they will expect a quick and accurate response. It will be imperative that you have quick access to the information required to complete a quote on each type of insurance coverage.
For this assignment, you will complete your “Insurance Quoting Portfolio”. This portfolio will be for your reference as you begin your insurance career. In your portfolio, you will include the following:
- Information gathering questionnaires for Personal Property, Commercial Property and Personal Car Insurance.
- A listing of websites you will use for gathering information for property insurance quoting. This will be websites that you will use frequently in your area. These can include realty websites, tax listing websites, and any other websites that you will use to gather pertinent property information.
- A listing of websites you will use for gathering information for auto insurance quoting. This will be websites that you will use frequently in your area. These can websites used to obtain motor vehicle record information, department of motor vehicle registration websites, prior claim report websites, vehicle information websites, and other websites that you will use to gather pertinent auto vehicle or driver information.
- Websites used to complete replacement cost estimates on property. This section should include sample replacement cost estimates for each type of personal or commercial property as well as instructions for using each estimating program.
- You should also have a copy of each policy contract in your portfolio. These will be used as a reference when you encounter customer questions requiring terms and agreements included in each policy.
When you actually begin your career, this quoting portfolio should be an organized binder including all of this information that can be quickly accessed for reference. You can organize it in any way that works best for you. However, my suggestion is to organize based on different policy types. Within these difference policy types, I would include separate sections for information gathering, quoting examples, policy contracts, value assessments, etc. As you continue your career, this portfolio will continue to grow. Anytime you start selling a new type of insurance, you will add a section with all the appropriate inclusions for that specific policy type. Also, you will want to include a section for “Frequently asked questions”. This will be a place for you to put information you obtain or notes that you make as you gain new information.
For purposes of this assignment, your will scan or save all of you information in PDF format. Organize it within a google drive file, just as you will in your “hard copy” you will create for your office. You will name the file “Insurance Quoting Portfolio”. If you are not familiar with using Google Drive, watch the video below.

Deborah, I really like this assignment. I think this will help students focus on what they are proficient at versus focusing on what they don't know. It gives them the opportunity to change an I can't to I can. Obviously, this is what we want all students to focus on. It seems more like a positive reinforcement exercise. I think it would be great if they were given a sample reflection to help them get started. Possibly you could provide a couple of examples. I think sometimes seeing what you want is easier than reading instructions. I really like the I am unclear folder. Provides a students with a way to ask questions without feeling inadequate. I am not generally a math person but I think I would enjoy this assignment.
Jessica, I really like this assignment, especially the reflective portion. The portfolio gives students the opportunity to share their work or keep it for future reference. I have a box where I keep a print out of all my assignments and my notes that I made while doing this assignment. I go back to it often when completing other assignments. It would be great for me to change it to an e-portfolio so I can access anytime, anywhere. On the reflective portion of the assignment, you could add a discussion board option so students to clarify "muddy" concepts between themselves. I really like that you are finding out what they learned to help you know what you need to have additional teaching on.
